LoRaWAN or Modbus RTU for three-phase energy monitoring?

Compare wireless LoRaWAN reporting with wired Modbus RTU and choose a DEM4 variant that fits your measurement point.

Select the measurement point first

A main board, tenant supply and individual machine answer different energy questions. The Yobiiq DEM4 offers direct-connected and current-transformer versions for three-phase metering. Confirm the supply arrangement and current range with the installer. Then choose the communications variant independently of the measurement connection.

Compare the data path

A detached building with proven radio coverage may suit LoRaWAN. An existing wired control panel may suit Modbus RTU. Check the exact ordering variant in the DEM4 datasheet.

Verify the readings before using them

  1. Label the meter by site, board and circuit.
  2. Check the configured CT ratio where applicable.
  3. Compare a local reading with the decoded payload or register value.
  4. Verify units, direction, timestamps and stale-data handling in the application.

Establish a baseline that includes normal operation and quiet hours. Energy counters show how much was used; demand data helps you investigate overlapping loads. For individual harmonics or phase unbalance, consider the PEM431 power quality meter. Use its measurements to guide investigation rather than assuming they identify the cause of a fault.
